Good public space signage serves in many ways. It provides safety, but also strengthens the bond with the viewer. In the case of commercial spaces, this translates into increased revenues.

Directional signage is a system of signs that inform drivers and pedestrians of their direction and destination. Directional signs include destination and direction boards, direction arrows, and other information signs. Directional signs are important for safety and comfort as they enable drivers to navigate safely and avoid mistakes and unnecessary manoeuvres.

Wayfinding is the process of orientation in space, which consists in finding a way to a destination and identifying places along the way. Wayfinding includes, among others, sign systems, directional signs and other elements of architecture, such as the arrangement of buildings or their parts. The purpose of wayfinding is to facilitate movement in space, as well as to minimise the stress and disorientation that can occur in the absence of appropriate signage. Wayfinding is especially important for large building complexes such as airports, hospitals, shopping centres and universities.
